Course Overview

This course include CPD certification and five NTU undergraduate credits upon successful completion of assessment.The course is taught at Level 4 – which is equivalent to first year undergraduate degree course.An A-Level Grade 3 or above is desirable in a subject linked to the construction sector or previous experience in the sector.

In this course, you will explore:

  • The evolution of the conservation agenda and heritage philosophy.
  • An overview of architectural history.
  • Traditional and vernacular construction techniques.
  • Metric surveys of historic buildings, equipment, and techniques.
  • Building surveys and assessment of condition.
  • The science of conservation materials.
  • Sensitive repair and design techniques suitable for properties of character.
  • Maintenance strategies for preserving the historic fabric and approaches to facilities management.
  • Application of statutory obligations, including individually protected and area-wide policies, as well as international protocols/charters.
  • Challenges and solutions related to the reuse and development of historic buildings and spaces.
  • Further training and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) options within the heritage sector.

Eligibity Criteria

There are some requirments :
  • GCSE Maths or International equivalent, minimum grade 4 (C) or above.
  • GCSE English or international equivalent minimum grade 4 (C) or above.
No software experience is required, although you should be confident in saving files and basic computer functions. This course is open to professionals at any stage of their career. Successful completion of the Introduction to AutoCAD course or thorough knowledge of the subjects covered therein will be a sufficient level to start this course.

On the course, you will:

  • Identify and analyze various architectural periods and styles in their social, economic, and physical contexts.
  • Conduct condition surveys and metric surveys using a diverse array of traditional and digital surveying equipment.
  • Produce precise spatial records that adhere to industry standards.
  • Offer informed professional guidance on the design, specification, and construction of traditional and vernacular construction techniques prevalent in the UK, such as rammed earth, timber/iron frame, brick, and flint.
  • Provide specialized advice to clients regarding solutions to challenges and conflicts encountered during the reuse and adaptation of historic buildings, focusing on human comfort and material performance.
  • Critically assess solutions through live and simulated case studies.
  • Suggest innovative initiatives and strategies aligned with UK planning policies and statutory controls to achieve favorable outcomes.
  • Offer relevant technical and philosophical advice on the sympathetic maintenance and repair of building fabrics.
